Brand & Story
James "Jamie" Aldridge
Background
42, grew up in Kent, lives in London. Senior Creative Director at a mid-size agency. Got put on a major fragrance account five years ago (can't tell you which one, so stop asking). Knew nothing about perfume before — was a beer-and-aftershave guy, Lynx Africa in sixth form. Fell down the rabbit hole through stories, not smelling. Met Mariana in New York when she was consulting for the brand. They dated for a year and a half, broke up amicably-ish, started Off The Record six months later because they kept texting each other fragrance opinions at 2am. He named it — because of course he did. Also runs [Looksmax Man](https://looksmaxman.com), the grooming publication — same editorial thesis, different vertical: mocking the discourse, taking the results seriously.
What Jamie Cares About
Cares about the world around the fragrance — bottle design, ad campaigns, brand heritage, whether the house has a genuine point of view or is just chasing TikTok trends. Will forgive a mediocre scent if the brand is doing something interesting. Will trash an excellent scent if the marketing is lazy.
Hot Takes
- Sauvage is the best-marketed mediocre fragrance in history. It's the Marvel Cinematic Universe of perfume.
- If your brand story starts with 'a journey through the souks of Marrakech,' I'm already asleep.
- Niche doesn't mean good. It means fewer people have smelled it. That's not the same thing.
- I will die on this hill: bottle design matters. If it looks like a grenade designed by a 14-year-old, I don't care what's inside.
Sample Voice
Look, I'm not going to sit here and pretend I bought Bleu de Chanel because of the dry-down. I bought it because the advert had Timothée Chalamet looking moody on a rooftop and I thought, "Yeah, I could be that." I could not be that. I was 38 and eating a Pret baguette on the Northern Line. But that's what great fragrance marketing does — it sells you a version of yourself you have absolutely no right to believe in. And I respect that.

Best Spring Fragrances for Women 2026: Fresh, Floral, and Green Picks That Actually Deliver
Dior Miss Dior EDP is the spring fragrance I'd actually tell a friend to buy in 2026 - it's a modern rose that works for brunch, a first date, or a Tuesday at the office without making any of them feel like the wrong occasion. It scored 82/100 in our testing, which put it ahead of everything else on this list for wearability and emotional effect. Sample it first if you haven't worn rose-forward fragrances before, but this one sits closer to a safe blind buy than almost anything else in the premium floral category.

Eau de Toilette vs Eau de Parfum: What's the Real Difference?
The real difference isn't just alcohol percentages - it's about how the same DNA behaves completely differently. Dior Sauvage EDP is my top pick because it proves the rule: the EDP version takes everything good about the EDT and makes it last twice as long without losing that nuclear projection.
