How We Make Money

Off The Record is an independently operated review site. When you click a product link on our site and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission from the retailer. This is called affiliate marketing, and it's how we keep the lights on.

This never costs you a penny extra. The price you pay is exactly the same whether you click through our link or go directly to the retailer. The commission comes out of the retailer's marketing budget, not your wallet.

Editorial Independence

We pick the products first and find affiliate links after. Our recommendations are based on research, testing, and genuine opinion — not on which retailers pay the highest commission. If we think a fragrance is overpriced or underwhelming, we'll say so, even if it has a lucrative affiliate program.

No brand has ever paid us to feature a product, and no brand ever will. The moment we start shilling, we lose the one thing that makes this site worth reading: honesty.

What Happens When You Click

When you click a product link, you're redirected to the retailer's website. A small tracking code in the URL tells the retailer you came from Off The Record. If you make a purchase within a certain window (usually 24 hours to 30 days depending on the retailer), we earn a commission.

We track which pages and links generate clicks so we can understand what content is most useful to you. We do not track any personally identifiable information. See our Privacy Policy for details.

Samplers First

Whenever possible, we link to sampler or discovery sets before full-size bottles. Fragrance is personal — a $180 blind buy on a scent you end up hating is a terrible experience. We'd rather you spend $25 on a sampler, find something you love, and come back for the full bottle. Better for you, better for us long-term.

FTC Compliance

In accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's guidelines on endorsements and testimonials (16 CFR Part 255), we disclose that this site contains affiliate links. This disclosure appears on every page that includes affiliate links, near the content itself — not buried in a footer.
