Off The Record

Editorial Standards

Our Promise

Every review and guide on Off The Record exists to help you find fragrances you'll actually love. We are not paid to recommend products. No brand has editorial input. Our revenue comes solely from affiliate commissions when you purchase through our links — and we only earn if we recommend something you genuinely want to buy.

How We Score Fragrances

Every product on the site receives scores across multiple dimensions, each rated on a 0–100 scale:

  • Overall Score — Our weighted assessment of a fragrance's quality, considering scent profile, performance, versatility, and value for money.
  • Value Score — Price relative to quality and longevity. A $25 fragrance that lasts 8 hours scores higher than a $200 one that lasts 3.
  • Blind Buy Safety — How safe it is to buy without smelling first. Based on crowd-pleasing notes, projection balance, and polarization risk.
  • Versatility — How many different situations the fragrance works in, from office to date night to weekend errands.

We also rate each fragrance for seasonal fit (spring, summer, fall, winter) and occasion fit (office, date, daily, gym, formal, night) on a 1–5 scale. These are informed by note composition, projection characteristics, and real-world wearability.

Our Review Process

  1. Research. We analyze the fragrance's note composition, brand positioning, price point, and how it fits within its category.
  2. Community data. We cross-reference community reviews from Fragrantica, Basenotes, and Reddit to understand real-world performance and polarization.
  3. Scoring. Each fragrance is scored using our standardized methodology. Scores reflect our editorial judgment, not paid placement.
  4. Human review. Every product page and guide is reviewed by our editorial team before publication. Nothing auto-publishes.
  5. Updates. We revisit and update content when prices change, new formulations launch, or our assessment evolves. Every page shows its last updated date.

How We Build Guides

Our guides are not repackaged press releases or top-10 lists pulled from affiliate feeds. Each guide starts with a real search question (“What's the best office cologne under $100?”) and builds toward a direct, specific answer.

Every guide includes a Quick Answer block at the top that names our #1 pick with a concrete reason. We believe you should get the answer first and the reasoning second — not the other way around.

Products are included in guides based on merit, not commission rate. If we feature a product, it's because we think it genuinely belongs there.

What We Won't Do

  • Accept payment for reviews or guide placement
  • Let brands preview or edit content before publication
  • Rank products higher because they pay more commission
  • Fabricate credentials — our team has industry experience but we don't claim certifications we don't hold
  • Hide our business model — we make money from affiliate links and we're transparent about it

Our Sampler-First Philosophy

When a fragrance has a low blind buy safety score, we recommend sampler or discovery set options first. A $25 sample set that helps you find the right fragrance is better than a $200 blind buy you end up regretting. This sometimes means recommending lower-priced options even when the full bottle would earn us more commission.

Corrections & Updates

We make mistakes. When we get something wrong — a discontinued product, an incorrect price, a reformulation we missed — we fix it and note the correction. If you spot an error, email us at hello@otrfragrance.com and we'll investigate.
